CINCINNATI, Ohio ? Despite Xavier?s two last second chances and a 23-point effort by All-American candidate Tara Boothe, the Musketeers fell to visiting No. 22 Maryland, 74-72. XU drops to 1-3 on the young season, while Maryland improves to 5-1.
With Xavier down two, 72-68, with 1:04 remaining in regulation, senior Adeola Olanrewaju converted on a putback to draw XU to within two points. After Terrapin forward Crystal Langhorne put in a layup on the other end, Olanrewaju answered by hitting a pair of free throws with 24-seconds left.
XU put the clamps on and held Maryland on the other end to keep the deficit at two points. However, Boothe?s last second jumper under defensive pressure could not find the bottom of the net.
In the first half, the Musketeers continued their trend of grabbing early leads when Boothe drained the first of her two 3-pointers at the 17:50 mark. Maryland would take a 12-10 lead on a Langhorne putback 3:30 later and sprinted out to a 10-0 run to seize an 18-10 lead at the 13:10 mark.
XU would answer though and responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to draw within two points, 18-16, with 11:20 left on the strength of a Suntana Granderson long ball. Granderson would cap off another XU run later in the half with a 3-pointer at the 1:40 mark to give XU a 33-32 lead. The two sides would go back and forth for the remainder of the stanza as the lead changed hands five times in the last 1:20. Maryland guard Shay Doron would end the half by hitting a 3-pointer to give the Terrapins a 39-37 edge heading into the half.
Three Musketeers reached double digits on the afternoon. Boothe?s game-high 23 points led the Musketeers, while also grabbing five boards, two steals and ended the contest 9-10 from the charity stripe. Granderson bucketed 18 points, going 8-15 from the field. Olanrewaju had 13 points to go along with eight boards.
Four Maryland players notched double digits as Kalika France shot 10-16 from the field and totaled 21 points to lead the way for the Terrapins.
