CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's basketball team will close out its six-game season-opening homestand Friday when it welcomes Appalachian State to Cintas Center. Tip-off between the Musketeers and Mountaineers is set for 7 p.m. for NEON Night! The first 300 students will get a FREE NEON Xavier Basketball T-shirt.

Xavier (3-2) suffered a 82-59 set back to No. 4/4 Duke Sunday at Cintas Center. XU’s 59 points were the most by any Blue Devil opponent this season. The Musketeers rank in the top five teams in the Atlantic 10 in several categories including: third in scoring offense (66.6) and 3-point field goal percentage (.353), fourth in free throw percentage (.750), field goal percentage (.422), and assists (15.0) and fifth in rebounding defense (32.8) and rebounding margin (+6.4).
XU is led by junior guard Shatyra Hawkes with 14.2 ppg. (11th A-10), 4.6 apg. (5th A-10), .842 free throw percentage (8th A-10) and a .467 3-point field goal percentage (4th A-10). Junior Ashley Wanninger is also averaging double-figures scoring with 10.0 ppg. and makes 2.2 3-point baskets per game (6th A-10). Sophomore Lakeisha Crouch is the team’s rebounding leader with 7.2 boards per contest (16th A-10) and junior Ty O’Neill boasts a 1.6 assist/turnover ratio (6th A-10).
Scouting Appalachian State
Appalachian State (4-1) is currently enjoying a three-game winning streak, including its most recent win over Norfolk State - a potential Xavier opponent this season, 68-61, on Sunday at ECU’s Thanksgiving Invitational. Friday’s game will be the Mountaineers’ third-straight away from home and their second “road” game of the season. ASU lost at Virginia Tech, 71-68, on Nov. 14. Appalachian State leads the Southern Conference in several categories: scoring offense (76.0), scoring margin (+19.4), free throw percentage (.821), field goal percentage (.452), rebounding defense (33.6), rebounding margin (+4.6) and assists (18.8)
The Mountaineers are led by Anna Freeman with 21.0 ppg., 8.2 rpg. and 4.0 apg. Courtney Freeman also averages double-figures scoring for ASU with 16.4 ppg. and shoots at a team-best 53.7 percent clip.
This is the first meeting between Xavier and Appalachian State.
