CINCINNATI – The Xavier women’s basketball team begins the exhibition portion of its 2013-14 season on Sunday, welcoming Division II Indianapolis to Cintas Center for a 2 p.m. matchup. Admission is FREE.

The Blue and White graduated the team’s top two scorers from last year's squad. That duo – Amber Gray and Jessica Pachko – accounted for 35 percent (21.1) of the team’s scoring and 33.6 percent of the team’s rebounding last year. Gray and Pachko, scored more than 1,000 points combined over the previous two seasons.
The Musketeers are coming off a season where they advanced to the 2013 Buick Atlantic 10 Championship and earned a No. 7 seed. XU finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 13-16 overall record that included a 7-7 mark in league play.
Xavier returns five players, including a trio of starters from last year’s squad that went 8-8 at Cintas Center. Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS), an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honoree, is XU’s top returning scorer (9.3 ppg) and three-point threat (53 made triples; .349). A 2013 College Sports Madness Preseason BIG EAST All-Conference fourth team selection and Xavier’s leader in assists (3.7 apg) and free-throw percentage (.810) last season, senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy), is the other returning starter. Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) is coming off a solid rookie campaign where she averaged 6.4 points and 5.4 rebounds and started in 15 of the 26 contests she played in.
Interim head coach Brian Neal and Company welcome in a huge freshman class (8), which includes Brianna Gladney (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan HS), Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville), Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS), Erica Dawson (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta HS), Leah Schaefer(Alexandria, Ky./Highlands HS), Martha Thompson (Solon, Ohio/Solon HS), Sydney Neal (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS) and Christina Ohlinger (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy).
Head coach Constantin Popa and the Greyhounds, return three starters from a team that posted a 19-10 record (11-7 GLVC) last season. The Hounds have added three transfers and two freshmen to the 2013-14 lineup. Senior Erin Murphy brings the most experience to UIndy, entering her final collegiate season after spending three years at IPFW. Last season, Murphy earned All-Summit League honorable mention after averaging 12.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game as a junior.
Picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST, XU will then open the program’s 43rd season (1st in the BIG EAST) against MAC opponent Ohio on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio. Led by new head coach Bob Boldon, the Bobcats are coming off a 6-23 season, where they finished 1-15 in Mid-American Conference play and lost in the first round of the conference tournament.
The Blue and White’s 2013-14 non-conference slate includes four contests against teams that qualified for postseason play, each of which finished the 2012-13 season with a top-55 RPI. In BIG EAST play, the Musketeers will face each of its nine new league foes twice each as part of the conference’s double round-robin format. Four BIG EAST teams appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season (DePaul, St. John's, Creighton and Villanova).

Xavier and Indianapolis have previously met four times, including two times during regular season play and a pair of exhibition contests. XU has won three of the four meetings and bested UIndy, 67-51, in the 2012-13 tune-up a year ago. Shatyra Hawkes had a game-high 17 points from 7-of-11 shooting from the field for the Blue and White in the exhibition win.
