Nov. 1, 2008
CINCINNATI – The Xavier University women’s basketball team has been ranked No. 22 nationally by the Associated Press, marking the first time Xavier has been ranked in the AP Top 25 since the final poll of the 2000-01 season.
The Musketeers are one of only two teams from outside the power conferences to be ranked. Old Dominion (CAA) checked in at No. 25.
Xavier was recently picked to win the Atlantic 10 Conference in a vote by league coaches and members of the media. The team posted a 24-9 record in 2007-08, won its second consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
The Musketeers look forward to the return of all five starters, including 2007-08 rookie of the year Ta’Shia Phillips, 2007-08 Sixth Player of the Year Tudy Reed and Preseason Third Team selection Jerri Taylor.
Amber Harris is also back after earning her second consecutive A-10 First Team nod last season, but she is out at least three months with a knee injury. Harris and Phillips each earned a spot on the 2008-09 Preseason First Team.
XU opens exhibition play on Tuesday, November 4 when the team welcomes the OGBR Legends to Cintas Center. Game time is set for 8 p.m. The Musketeers’ regular season opener is set for Friday, November 14 when the team takes on 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Robert Morris in the first round of the Preseason WNIT. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cintas Center.
