CINCINNATI - The Associated Press has released its 2009-10 Preseason Poll and Xavier will begin the season as the No. 11 team in the country.  No. 11 is the highest XU has ever been ranked in the AP Poll, eclipsing its previous high of No. 12 during the last five weeks of the 2000-01 season. 

The Musketeers begin the 2009-10 season at Southern Cal. on Friday, November 13 and XU will take on Arizona State Saturday, November 21.  Game time for the home opener is set for 2 p.m.  The Sun Devils begin the season ranked No. 16 by the AP and are one of five opponents to begin the season ranked by the AP.  LSU (No. 9), Michigan State (No. 10), Kansas (No. 20) and Middle Tennessee (No. 24) are the others.

Mississippi State and Temple fall under the also receiving votes category. 

XU posted a 25-7 overall mark and won the 2008-09 Atlantic 10 Regular Season Title with a 13-1 record last year.  The team led the country in field goal percentage defense and finished third in rebounding margin. 


 

 

The Musketeers lost seniors Tudy Reed and Jerri Taylor to graduation but look forward to the return of junior forward Amber Harris, who missed the entire 2008-09 season due to an injury. 

Harris averaged team highs of 15.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game during the 2007-08 season and became XU's all-time leader in blocked shots during her freshman season.  XU will also return 2008-09 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Ta'Shia Phillips, who led the team with 13.9 points and 12.1 rebounds.  Ta'Shia Phillips and Harris earned a spot on the Preseason First Team and the Preseason Defensive Team.

Junior point guard Special Jennings is also back for XU.  Jennings averaged 7.7 points and 3.3 assists per game last year and was honored as a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Third Team selection.
