Women's Basketball Picked to Finish First in Atlantic 10
Oct. 27, 2010 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After capturing its second-straight Atlantic 10 Championship and advancing to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance under Head Coach Kevin McGuff, Xavier has been tabbed as the team to beat in the A-10 women's basketball race, according to a vote of the league's head coaches. Dayton and Temple, who also made an appearance in last year's NCAA Tournament, round out the top three, respectively. The Musketeers (30-4/14-0), receiving 12 first-place votes, return four starters among seven letterwinners from a squad that put together one of the best seasons in school history last year. In 2009-10, behind the efforts of A-10 Player of the Year Amber Harris (16.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg) and A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Ta'Shia Phillips (13.9 ppg, 11.7 rpg), Xavier posted 30 wins, went 14-0 in league play, claimed the Conference Championship crown and made an appearance in the Elite Eight. Both Harris and Phillips - preseason All-Conference First Team picks -- return to the line-up this season, along with classmate and preseason All-Conference Second Team selection Special Jennings (8.4 ppg, 4.4 apg). Phillips was also named to the preseason All-Defensive team. Xavier was the only team to place three players on Preseason All-Conferences teams. Both Harris and Phillips have started to rack up preseason honors including being named to the 2010-11 preseason Wade Watch for the State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year, Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 list as well as to Sporting News Preseason All-America teams. The duo should prove to be one of the most formidable front court duos in the country this season.
The Musketeers are set to open the 2010-11 season with an exhibition contest against Bellarmine on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. at Cintas Center. The regular season is set to kick off on the road at South Carolina on Nov. 12 2010-11 A-10 Predicted Order of Finish (First-Place Votes) |
