CINCINNATI – The Xavier women’s basketball team finalized its 2013-14 schedule with today’s announcement of its first BIG EAST Conference slate. The Musketeers will play each of its nine new league foes twice each as part of the conference’s double round-robin format.
The Blue and White’s first game in the BIG EAST will see the Musketeers travel to Chicago, Ill. to face DePaul on New Year’s Day for the seventh meeting between the two squads. The Blue Demons were one of four BIG EAST teams to appear in the NCAA Tournament last season (St. John's, Creighton and Villanova).
The Musketeers will then have their first BIG EAST homestand. XU will host St. John’s (Jan. 4), Georgetown (Jan. 8) and Marquette (Jan. 11) over a seven-day period.
Next the Blue and While will travel to Omaha, Neb. to battle the Jays of Creighton on Jan. 15, followed by homes games against Providence on Jan. 18 and Seton Hall on Jan. 21. Villanova and St. John’s then make their first trip to Cintas Center on Jan. 25 and Jan. 29, respectively.
Xavier hosts Butler (Feb. 1) and DePaul (Feb. 5), then heads to Washington, D.C. to take on the Hoyas of Georgetown on Feb. 8 before facing Marquette on the road (Feb. 15).
Creighton comes to Cintas Center on Feb. 18, followed by the Musketeers traveling to Providence (Feb. 22) and Butler (Feb. 26) to close out February.
Xavier’s final BIG EAST home game of the regular season is against Villanova on March 1, while the regular season wraps up on the road at Seton Hall on March 4.
The BIG EAST Conference women's championship tournament will be hosted by DePaul and played in Rosemont, Ill. at Allstate Arena from March 8-11. The semifinals and finals of the BIG EAST Tournament will be televised by Fox Sports 1.
The Musketeers are coming of a season where they advanced to the 2013 Buick Atlantic 10 Championship and earned a No. 7 seed. XU finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 13-16 overall record that included a 7-7 mark in league play.
The Musketeers return nine players, including a trio of starters from last year’s squad that went 8-8 at Cintas Center. Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) is XU’s top returning scorer (9.3 ppg) and three-point threat (53 made triples; .349). Xavier’s leader in assists (3.7 apg) and free-throw percentage (.810) last season, senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy), is the other returning starter. Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) is coming off a solid rookie campaign where she averaged 6.4 points and 5.4 rebounds and started in 15 of the 26 contests she played in.
