Head coach Amy Waugh has announced the Xavier women's basketball 2012-13 non-conference schedule
Aug. 9, 2012
CINCINNATI - The Xavier women’s basketball team announced its non-conference schedule today, including all dates. The Musketeers will potentially face nine non-conference 2011-12 postseason teams, including Duke (NCAA Elite Eight) on November 25 at home. Adding in the 2013 Atlantic 10 opponents, XU will face up to 15 2012 postseason teams in the upcoming season.
XU is coming off its 17th consecutive appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2012 and head coach Amy Waugh is entering her second season at Xavier, her alma mater. Waugh and her staff have put together a challenging schedule for the 2012-13 season.
"Our schedule for the upcoming season should provide us with the tests we need to meet our goal of improving every single day of the season," said Waugh. "We are also very excited about the teams that will come to Cintas Center. It will be a great opportunity for us to have the Xavier Family support us as we take on teams such as Duke, Michigan and all the tough opponents we will face this season at home."
Two notable games on the home slate include return games from the 2010-11 season from Duke and Michigan. The Blue Devils finished the 2011-12 season 27-6 overall and were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the Regional Finals by then-No. 2 Stanford. Duke returns all five of its double-figures scorers from last season including the team’s leading scorer and rebounder in sophomore Elizabeth Williams (14.0 ppg., 7.8 rpg.).
The Michigan Wolverines are coming off a 20-12 season a year ago and return their leading scorer in Rachel Sheffer who averaged 12.8 ppg. last season. U-M was bounced from the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament by women’s basketball powerhouse Oklahoma.
The Musketeers will kick off the 2012-13 season with an exhibition contest against Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 3 in Cintas Center. The regular season will get underway Nov. 10 as XU plays host to Bucknell on Nov. 10 followed by a Nov. 12 home match-up against 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Michigan. After a week off, Xavier will host High Point (WNIT) Monday, Nov. 19 and will play a Wednesday night tilt against Morehead State Nov. 21 at Cintas Center.
Continuing its season-opening six-game homestand, the Musketeers welcome Duke to Cintas Center on Sunday, Nov. 25 and will close out the month of November by hosting Appalachian State (WNIT) on Friday, Nov. 30. Although it will be held only three miles from Xavier’s campus, XU’s first road contest of the season will come on Sunday, Dec. 2 at crosstown foe Cincinnati (WNIT) followed by a Thursday evening game at Middle Tennessee (NCAA) on Dec. 6.
Xavier will return home to the friendly confines of Cintas Center on Dec. 15 as it faces off against intrastate rival Wright State (WBI) in a Saturday afternoon tilt. On Tuesday, Dec. 18 the Musketeers will host UNCW (WNIT) and wrap up the week on the road at Indiana on Friday, Dec. 21.
In late December, XU will be participating in a tournament at Virginia that features a match-up against Northern Illinois on Dec. 28 and also a contest against either the host Cavaliers (WNIT) or Norfolk State on Dec. 29. The Musketeers will wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule after the new year as they host Ohio on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 5.
With the newly-expanded Atlantic 10 Conference, Xavier will still play a 14-game league slate but will only play Dayton once and will not face Saint Joseph’s this season. The Musketeers’ home A-10 contests include Duquesne (WNIT), Fordham, George Washington, La Salle, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure (NCAA Sweet 16) and Saint Louis while XU will face Butler, Charlotte (WNIT), Dayton (NCAA), Massachusetts, Richmond (WNIT), Temple (WNIT) and Virginia Commonwealth on the road.
The 2013 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship will be held March 8-11 at a site to be determined.
