Women's Basketball Inks Two in Late Period
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Head women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff has announced the signing of Joei Clyburn and Deanna Mason to National Letters of Intent. Clyburn, a transfer from West Virginia, will be required to sit out the 2005-06 season due to NCAA regulations but Mason will be eligible to play the entire 2005-06 campaign.
“We are very excited about the additions of Joei and Deanna,” said McGuff. “They are both great kids who will be terrific additions to the Xavier basketball family.”
Mason, a 6-3 center, spent the last three years at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. Mason still has two years of eligibility remaining though as she red-shirted during the 2002-03 campaign. The Detroit, Michigan native averaged 13 points and nine rebounds during the 2004-05 season and led the Lions to a third-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament.
Mason took home some individual hardware while with the Lady Lions as well. She was named First Team All-East Division, Second Team All-Region II, All-Region II Tournament Team, and was an All-NJCAA Tournament Team selection last year.
Clyburn, a 6-2 forward, averaged 2.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in nine games for the Mountaineers during the 2004-05 season. The Detroit, Michigan native will be eligible to play during the 2006-07 season and has one year of eligibility remaining. Prior to her stint in Morgantown, Clyburn attended UAFS with Mason and played for the Lions during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons. Clyburn averaged 15.3 points and 9.4 rebounds during her sophomore year at UAFS and was honored as a NJCAA First-Team All-American and was also selected as the NJCAA Region II Player of the Year.
With both Clyburn and Mason on the team during the 2003-04 season, the Lions finished with a 25-2 record and earned a No. 3 national ranking.
XU finished the season with an overall record of 22-10 and shared the Atlantic 10 West Division Regular Season crown with George Washington after a 13-3 finish in league play. The Musketeers earned a bid into the WNIT and advanced to the quarterfinal round.
