Ta'Shia Phillips Earns Fifth A-10 Player of the Week Honor
March 2, 2009
CINCINNATI – Sophomore center Ta’Shia Phillips has been honored as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for her efforts in leading the No. 16/13 Xavier University women’s basketball team to a 1-1 week. Phillips, who was recently voted onto the prestigious 30-member Naismith Award Mid-Season Watch List, earns the honor for the fifth time this season.
Phillips averaged 16 points and 13.5 rebounds while shooting 68.4 percent from the field last week. The Indianapolis native scored 10 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double at Temple on Wednesday. She also blocked two shots in 28 foul-plagued minutes.
She followed that up with a 22-point, 18-rebound effort in Xavier’s 75-47 win over Fordham in Saturday’s regular season finale. Phillips was 8-of-11 from the floor while also blocking four shots and registering two steals against the Rams.
Phillips, XU’s leading scorer and rebounder, led the Musketeers to a 25-5 overall record and a 13-1 mark in Atlantic 10 play. Xavier earned the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s Atlantic 10 Championship after clinching the outright A-10 Regular Season Crown on Saturday. The 25 wins are tied for the most regular-season victories in school history.
No. 1 seeded Xavier will take on either No. 8 Dayton or No. 9 Saint Louis in Saturday’s quarterfinal at 12 p.m. All action takes place at Charlotte’s Halton Arena.
