RICHMOND, Va. - In the second contest of its two-game road swing, the Xavier women's basketball team is in Richmond, Va., preparing for a Saturday afternoon match-up with Virginia Commonwealth. The Musketeers are riding a three-game winning streak and have won four of their last five games. This will be XU's first-ever meeting with new Atlantic 10 foe VCU.
About the Musketeers Xavier (10-15, 4-7 A-10) has now won three consecutive and four of its last five games with a 54-53 thriller over Temple on Wednesday in Philadelphia. Senior Jessica Pachko, who sank the game-winning shot with six seconds remaining, narrowly missed the double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. As a team, XU ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in defensive rebounds (26.9), third in 3-point field goal percentage (.320) and rebounding defense (34.6), fourth in field goal percentage (.399) and fifth in free throw percentage (.715) and rebounding margin (+3.0).
The Musketeers are led by senior Amber Gray who averages 11.2 ppg. (20th A-10) while shooting 79.6 percent from the line (5th A-10). Junior Shatyra Hawkes dishes out a team-best 3.7 apg. (9th A-10) and holds a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio (7th A-10) and senior Jessica Pachko grabs a team-best 6.6 rpg. (17th A-10) and shoots at a 54.2 clip. Junior Ashley Wanninger sinks 35.6 percent of her shots from behind the arc (9th A-10) and averages 1.9 3-point baskets per contest (6th A-10).
Scouting Virginia Commonwealth VCU (10-16, 3-8 A-10) had its two-game winning streak snapped by Richmond Wednesday night, 66-62, despite a 29-point, 20-rebound night from the Rams' Robyn Parks. As a team, VCU ranks second in the A-10 in steals (11.0), fifth in offensive rebounding percentage (.367) and sixth in rebounding defense (38.5) and offensive rebounds (14.3).
The Rams are led by Parks with 18.0 ppg. (2nd A-10) and 7.9 rpg. (8th A-10). Jessica Pellechio also averages double-figures scoring for VCU with 10.5 ppg. while Carleeda Green is the team's assist leader dishing out 4.1 apg. (8th A-10).
The Series Saturday afternoon's tilt at the Siegel Center will be the first meeting between Xavier and Virginia Commonwealth.
Last Time Out After controlling most of the first half, Xavier headed into the locker room Wednesday night leading Temple, 25-21. The Owls came out firing and held the six-point lead with just over eight minutes to play. After two made free throws, Temple held the five-point advantage with 1:31 left but Xavier scored the last six points of the game including the game-winner by senior Jessica Pachko with only six ticks on the clock. The Musketeers picked up the 54-53 win over the Owls as Pachko led the team with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Junior Shatyra Hawkes also posted double-digits scoring with 13 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
