Women's Basketball Scorches Nets at Fordham

NEW YORK --- All five starters scored in double figures as Xavier (No. 13 AP/No. 15 USA Today/ESPN/WBCA) downed Fordham 92-73 Sunday. The Musketeers (21-2 overall, 11-1 A-10) recorded the third-best field goal percentage in Atlantic 10 Conference history by connecting on 68.6 percent of their shots from the field.

Leading that effort for Xavier was senior Jennifer Phillips (Elida, Ohio/Elida) who went 10-of-11 from the field for a team-high 24 points. Phillips’ shooting from the field is the third-best individual shooting performance ever in an A-10 game, tying a mark she set in her sophomore year against St. Bonaventure.

The Musketeers pulled away from Fordham with a 19-3 run to end the first half. XU led 48-25 at intermission. Xavier held the Rams scoreless over the first five minutes of the second half while stretching the lead to 62-25 before Fordham scored.

Taru Tuukkanen (Helsinki, Finland) added 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting for Xavier. Reetta Piipari (Kotka, Finland/Minster (Ohio)) recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 assists. Jennifer Parr (Carlisle, Ohio/Carlisle) and Nicole Levandusky (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton) added 13 and 12 points respectively.

Lauren Fleischer led Fordham with 14 points.

Xavier will close out the home portion of its schedule this week. The Musketeers will host St. Joseph’s on Friday at 7 p.m. Xavier will play Dayton Sunday at 2 p.m. Following the game Xavier’s five seniors will be honored as part of Senior Day.
