Women's Basketball Grounded By Flyers
CINCINNATI--- Dayton opened Monday’s game at Xavier with a 19-2 run and never looked back in downing the XU women’s basketball team 80-68 at the Cintas Center.
The Musketeers, who trailed by as many as 20 in the game, clawed back to within three of Dayton at 57-54 with 12 minutes left in the game.
The Flyers, behind 55.2 percent shooting, held on for the victory.
Xavier falls to 7-13 on the year and 2-6 in the Atlantic 10. Dayton swept the season series from Xavier from the first time since 1996-97 and upped its record to 8-11 overall and 5-3 in the A-10.
Cincinnati-natives Chrissy Donovan (St. Urusla) and Sarah Allen (Mt. Notre Dame) led the Flyers to their quite start in the game. Donovan went 7-9 from the field to lead UD with 17 points in the first half while Allen added 11 on 4-5 shooting.
The Flyers shot 64.5 percent in the first half, including a 7-of-10 performance from three point range to hold a 47-36 lead at intermission.
Xavier was still down 11, 53-42, with 16:40 left in the game.
The Musketeers used a 10-2 run to close the gap to three just four minutes later. Three layups by Kate Kreager (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) sparked the Xavier spurt.
UD answered with a 10-2 run and never let the Musketeers get closer than eight points until the final minute.
Amy Waugh (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) led Xavier with 19 points. Kreager and Reetta Piipari (Kotka, Finland/Minster (Ohio)) added 18 apiece.
Waugh and Piipari had seven assists apiece.
Kristy Hineline led UD with 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting. She added 12 rebounds for her third straight double-double.
Donovan ended with 17 and Allen closed with 13.
Xavier returns to action on Thursday at Rhode Island in a 7 p.m. before playing Massachusetts at noon Saturday. Both games can be heard on WVXU (91.7 FM).
