Women's Basketball Falls to Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. – The long ball efforts of the Xavier women’s basketball team were not enough to counter the hot shooting Richmond Spiders on Sunday. The Musketeers lost 93-73 at the Robins Center to fall to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond moves to 8-11 and 2-4.
Xavier set a school record with 34 three point attempts in the game. That number of attempts is the second-most ever attempted in an Atlantic 10 game.
The Musketeers connected on a season-high 11 of their attempts from behind the arc for a .324 shooting percentage.
Xavier took an 8-5 lead in the first three and a half minutes of the game, but the Spiders used a 12-0 run over the next three and a half minutes open up a 17-8 advantage with 13 minutes left in the first half.
The Musketeers drew within five points to trail 28-23 with 7:22 showing on the clock. Once again, Richmond responded, using a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to 14, 37-23, with 4:55 left in the period.
XU again closed the gap and got it to 38-32 with three minutes left. But Richmond stretched the lead to 10, 46-36 at intermission.
For Xavier, three pointers were the saving grace in the first half. XU hit eight first half triples on 17 attempts in the first half. The Musketeers were 4-of-16 from inside the arc in the first half.
For Richmond, Ebony Tanner was perfect on eight attempts to score 16 first half points. As a team, Richmond connected on 61.8 percent of its shots (21-of-34) in the first half.
Richmond was up 14, 56-42, with 15 minutes left in the game. An 11-0 Spider run over the next two minutes gave Richmond a 67-42 edge.
The Spiders built the lead to as many as 30, going up 87-57, with five and a half minutes remaining.
Kate Kreager (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) recorded her fourth double-double of the season and sixth of her career with 20 points and a career high tying 11 rebounds. Kreager was 9-for-11 from the field in the contest.
Amy Waugh added 24 points, thanks to 6-of-10 shooting from three point range. She also dished out nine assists.
Tanner and Krystn Gull scored 22 apiece to record a career and season high respectively. Amber Goppert added 17 points as five Spiders reached double figures.
Kate Flavin grabbed a career high 16 rebounds while Tanner and Goppart hauled in nine apiece as Richmond out-rebounded Xavier 57-38.
The loss was Xavier’s sixth straight road defeat of the season.
Xavier will return to action on Friday at St. Bonaventure for a 7 p.m. The Musketeers will return to the Cintas Center on Monday, Jan. 28, for a 7 p.m. game against Dayton.
