CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's basketball team is hitting the road for a mid-week match-up at Butler Thursday, Jan. 17. Tip is set for 7 p.m. between the Musketeers and Bulldogs at BU's Hinkle Fieldhouse. Thursday's contest will be XU's first road conference game of the season and the first meeting between XU and BU since the 2000-01 season.
About the Musketeers
Xavier (6-9, 0-1 A-10) battled back from 20 points down against Duquesne in its A-10 opener Sunday but fell short, 56-54. The Musketeers are currently suffering a three-game losing streak. As a team, XU ranks among the top six teams in the league in several categories: second in defensive rebounds (27.9), third in defensive rebounding percentage (.715), fifth in rebounding margin (+3.8) and sixth in scoring offense (62.1), rebounding offense (40.0) and defense (36.2).
The Musketeers are led by senior Amber Gray with 10.5 ppg. and a .758 free throw percentage (8th A-10). Junior Shatyra Hawkes dishes out a team-best 3.9 apg. (9th A-10) and boasts a 1.4 assist/turnover ratio (8th A-10). Sharp-shooter junior Ashley Wanninger sinks 2.1 3-point baskets per game (5th A-10) and holds a .348 3-point shooting percentage (12th A-10) while also averaging 34.8 mpg. (5th A-10).
Butler (9-7, 0-1 A-10) suffered an 82-39 loss to Dayton at home on January 12 to open Atlantic 10 play. The Bulldogs had two players score in double figures in Daress McClung (11) and former Xavier Musketeer Liz Stratman (11) in the loss. As a team, BU ranks first in the A-10 in block shots (6.4) and fourth in defensive rebounds (26.1).
The Bulldogs are led by McClung with 16.4 ppg. (3rd A-10) and Taylor Schippers with 14.7 ppg. (6th A-10). McClung also leads the team with 10.1 rpg. (4th A-10), a .423 field goal percentage (15th A-10), 2.6 spg. (3rd A-10) and 2.6 bpg. (1st A-10). Schippers is the team's assist leader averaging 4.1 dimes per contest (8th A-10).
The Musketeers and Bulldogs have previously met 30 times with Butler holding the 16-14 advantage in the series. XU and BU were formerly league-mates in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and faced off in the 1993 MCC Tournament title game with the Musketeers claiming the 82-72 win. The two first met in 1983 and last faced off during the 2000-01 season. Xavier has won the last three meetings between the two squads.

Xavier opened Atlantic 10 Conference play at home against Duquesne Sunday afternoon, battling back from a 20-point second-half deficit to pull within two but ran out of time eventually falling, 56-54. Senior Amber Gray paced the Musketeers with 15 points and narrowly missed the double-double after corralling nine boards. Freshman Aliyah Zantt also posted double-figures scoring with a career-high-tying 12 points and grabbed a career-high-tying six boards on the afternoon.
