Xavier Will Hold Second Annual Youth Day on Friday
Jan. 11, 2006 The Xavier Department of Athletics will host the second annual Youth Day on Friday, January 13, prior to the Xavier women's basketball game against Richmond at noon. Over 2,800 area school children are expected to attend the "Be Cool and Stay in School" program which will feature a variety of educational components, interactive and non-traditional learning activities, and the fun of Xavier women's basketball. The Youth Day fieldtrip has become an annual event where schools across Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky travel to a Xavier women's basketball game and learn the values of education, teamwork, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in a pre-game program. Procter & Gamble is sponsoring the event. "We are excited to partner with Xavier athletics and to deliver a program that will help promote the importance of education" said Mary Woods, External Relations for Procter & Gamble. Each student attending will receive a pre-game educational presentation and a gift bag upon departure. Xavier assistant coach Amber Stocks-Whitford will welcome students at 10:00 AM and be followed by a series of speakers and performances including Mary Baldwin Morris and Iris Prager. Mary Baldwin Morris has worked for the Georgia State Coalition for Health Education and has been a school lecturer for over 20+ years. Morris is renowned for her speaking engagements to thousands of students every year. Prager, from Procter & Gamble, manages the in-class school lecture program in North America. The program reached over 350 million students in 2004-05 and Prager also receives over 3.5 million questions per week via ASK IRIS, her on-line forum. Morris and Prager will speak on the importance of education and staying in school to the students in attendance. In addition, former Cincinnati Bengals placekicker Doug Pelfrey will address the audience at halftime. For more information, please contact the Xavier Department of Athletics at (513) 745-3604.
