LAWRENCE, Kan. - Six-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Amber Harris scored 16 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Xavier University women's basketball team defeated Kansas 72-63 on Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan. With the win, XU improves to 9-4 on the year while the Jayhawks slip to 5-7.
With the win, XU improves to 9-1 all-time on New Year's Eve and is 55-3 when scoring at least 70 points under Kevin McGuff.
Harris' 16 came on 7-of-18 shooting and she also snatched nine rebounds and swatted six shots on the afternoon. Seniors Joei Clyburn and Michele Miller each scored 14 for Xavier. Miller took care of business from the charity stripe, going 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Clyburn was just one rebound shy of a double-double and hit a pair of big 3-pointers early in the second half.
Senior guard Miranda Green added 10 points and two assists.
Xavier led by as many as 12 points early in the second half but KU closed to within one point, 59-58, after LaChelda Jacobs converted on a fast break lay up with 3:20 to go, capping a 7-0 Kansas run.
XU answered the bell though as Clyburn converted on a put-back on the ensuing possession to spark an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to give Xavier a 67-58 lead and effectively put the game away.
The Musketeers iced the contest from the free throw line, going 11-of-12 in the final 2:20.
XU held KU to 36.5 percent (23-of-63) shooting and the Jayhawks were just 1-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half. Xavier also held a 39-to-34 advantage on the glass and improves to 6-1 on the year when out-rebounding its opponent.
Jacobs led the way for KU with 18 points and seven rebounds.
The Jayhawks jumped out to 9-3 lead with 15:30 remaining in the first half on the strength of three 3-point field goals (two of which found the bottom of the net via the backboard) including two from freshman Kelly Kohn.
XU would not let KU get to far ahead and sprinted out to a 7-0 run over a 1:10 span, which culminated with a Joei Clyburn lay-up at the 6:10 mark to give XU a 23-20 lead.
KU recaptured a 27-26 lead when Taylor MacIntosh drained a jumper at the 3:50 mark but the Musketeers ended the half on an 8-2 spurt and took a 34-29 edge into the locker room.
XU will return to action on Tuesday, January 2 when the team welcomes Penn to the Queen City. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
