Dec. 29, 2013
CINCINNATI - Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) scored a game-high 23 points as the Xavier women's basketball team ended the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 62-55 loss to Big Ten foe Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers fell to 5-7 on the year before entering BIG EAST play, while the Hoosiers remain undefeated with a record of 13-0 as they enter their Big Ten schedule in 2014.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference in three-point field goals per game (6.0), knocked down 8-of-32 shots from behind the arc, highlighted by five from the sharp-shooting Hawkes.
Hawkes shot 8-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-11 from long distance to finish with 23 points in 31 minutes. Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle) recorded her second career double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) had a solid afternoon finishing with seven points and five rebounds.
The Hoosiers were led by senior Tabitha Gerardot's team-high 19 points. Senior Simone Deloach turned in a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Agler and Larryn Brooks rounded out the top scorers for the Hoosiers with nine points each. Indiana won the rebounding battle, 44-40, thanks to a 10 rebound performance by Alexis Gassion, a career-high from the freshman.
Indiana took an early lead in the first half thanks to an 11-0 run to pull out to an eight point lead over the Musketeers, 13-5. Xavier used a 10-0 spurt of their own late in the first half to come within six points of the Hoosiers (27-21) with 2:53 left in the opening period. IU went on to score the final six points of the half and took a 12-point lead (33-21) into the locker room at the intermission.
Late in the second half Xavier closed the gap to seven points with a trifecta from Crittendon, but failed to get any closer to the Hoosiers for the rest of the second half.
Both teams struggled from the field on the afternoon. Indiana shot 37.7-percent from the field (23-of-61) and 25.0-percent from beyond the arc (4-of-16). Xavier knocked down 20-of-56 from the floor (35.7-percent) and 8-of-32 from behind the arc (25.0-percent).
Xavier will now travel to the Windy City for their first BIG EAST conference matchup. XU will face DePaul on New Year's Day for the seventh all-time meeting between the two squads. The Blue Demons were one of four BIG EAST teams to appear in the NCAA Tournament last season (St. John's, Creighton and Villanova).
