@Xavier_WBB Falls To Cincinnati, 47-26, In The 2013 Crosstown Classic
Dec. 21, 2013
CINCINNATI - Sophomores Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) led the team in scoring as the Xavier women's basketball team fell, 47-26, to Cincinnati in the 2013 Crosstown Classic at Cintas Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss XU falls to 5-6, while the Bearcats improve to 7-4 on the season. UC’s win also puts an end to Xavier’s streak of winning the previous four Crosstown Classics.
The Musketeers, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference in three-point field goals per game (6.6), did not make a three-pointer for the first time in the last 40 games (dating back to the 2012-13 season). Over the last eight seasons (263 games), Xavier has made at least one triple in 261 contests.
UC jumped on the Musketeers early, outscoring Xavier 9-2 over the first 5:17 of the opening period. XU responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a layup from Glover, to even the score at 9-9 (11:08). The Blue and White held UC scoreless for 5:52 during their run.
The Bearcats went on to outscore the Musketeers 16-8 over the final 11 minutes of the half to take a 25-17 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
XU struggled shooting the ball in the first half, hitting just 7-of-25 attempts (28 percent) from the field, while UC shot 10-of-26 (38.5 percent) from the field. The Bearcats held a 21-14 rebounding edge in the opening 20 minutes, while Xavier forced UC into 10 turnovers and scored 10 points off of those miscues.
In the second half, UC cranked it up defensively. The Bearcats held Xavier scoreless for the first 6:12 of the period and without a field goal for the first 9:49 of the half. Cincinnati held XU to 15.4 percent shooting from the floor in the second half and outscored the Blue and White 22-9 in the period en route to the 47-26 non-conference win.
The Musketeers will return the court on December 29 when they welcome the Hoosiers of Indiana to Cintas Center. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start.
