DAYTON - Two Musketeers scored in double figures and the team shot 40 percent as the Xavier women's basketball team fell 79-54 at Wright State on Sunday afternoon at WSU's Nutter Center.
With the loss XU falls to 5-5, while the Raiders improve to 8-3 on the season.
An Ivory James three gave WSU the lead for good at 11-9 with 15:11 to play in the first half, but a layup from sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) cut the WSU lead down to 27-20 (5:29). The Raiders went on to close out the half with a 10-2 run to go ahead 37-22 at the intermission.
Both teams shot 40 percent from the field in the first half, but Wright State had 10 more attempts thanks to an 8-4 edge in offensive rebounds and a 14-8 turnover differential. WSU knocked in 5-of-15 attempts from three-point range and 4-of-5 at the charity stripe compared to 1-of-4 from behind the arc and 1-of-3 at the line for the Blue and White.
Xavier cut the deficit down to eight on two occasions in the second half and trailed 55-46 with 11:23 to play before the Raiders broke the game open with a 14-2 run over the next five minutes. Wright State went on to pick up the 79-54 non-conference win.
WSU shot 43 percent (29-of-67) from the floor, including 10-of-25 from long distance, while Xavier shot 41 percent (22-of-54) on the afternoon, but shot just 2-of-14 from behind the arc. The Raiders won the rebounding battle 44-32 and forced XU into a season-high 24 turnovers.
Tay'ler Mingo led Wright State with 24 points and seven assists while Ivory James had 15.
The Musketeers will return to Cintas Center to host Cincinnati for the 2013 Skyline Chilli Crosstown Classic on Dec. 21 (2 p.m.). Xavier has won four consecutive Crosstown Classic's over UC.
