CINCINNATI - Musketeer star Amber Harris scored 17 points and sophomore guard Tyeasha Moss added 14 to lead the No. 9/10 Xavier University women's basketball team past Cincinnati, 69-38, on Sunday afternoon in the annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout Battle for the Kendle Cup at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 7-0 on the season while UC slips to 4-4.
The Musketeers are 7-0 for the first time in school history and eclipsed the 2000-01 team's 6-0 start as the best in program history. The Musketeers improved to 5-0 against the power conferences this season and still have five games against the BCS this season.
The Musketeers played in front of a packed Cintas Center on Sunday as the campaign to "Sellout the Shootout" was a success.
Harris' 17 came on 7-of-13 shooting. She also snared eight rebounds against the Bearcats. Moss' 14 came on 5-of-7 shooting and she buried both of her attempts from long-range.
The Bearcats jumped out to a quick start and led 5-0 after Shareese Ulis converted on a pull up jumper just 1:20 into the contest. Xavier would score the next four points and looked to be getting in gear but Cincinnati was able to extend the lead to 10-6 after Ulis buried another jumper with 14:50
However, Xavier seized control of the contest by clamping down defensively and allowing the Bearcats to score only six points for the remainder of the second half. XU sprinted out to an 11-0 run over the next 4:30 and led 17-10 after Tyeasha Moss converted on a put back at the 10:20 mark.
XU did not let up an extended the 11-0 spurt to a dominating 33-6 run and headed into the locker room leading 39-18. Harris was a dominating force in the first half, scoring 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and dishing-out three assists. The Indianapolis native was key to the Musketeers' defensive proficiency as she was her normal intimidating self down low.
UC was never able to put together any semblance of a threat as Xavier extended its lead to as many as 33 points, 64-31, en route to the 69-38 victory.
Xavier out-scored Cincinnati 34-to-16 in the paint and the Musketeer reserves out-did the Cincinnati bench 21-to-2. The Musketeers were outstanding defensively, holding UC to 27.5 percent shooting while XU shot an efficient 48.2 percent from the floor.
The Musketeers are back in action on Wednesday, December 9 when the team travels up I-75 to take on No. 21/22 Michigan State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in East Lansing.
