CINCINNATI - Junior guard Michele Miller scored a career-high 21 points to lead four Musketeers in double-figures as the Xavier University women's basketball team past Eastern Kentucky, 82-49, on Tuesday evening at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 6-1 on the year while the Colonels dip to 1-6 on the campaign.

Miller's career high came on 8-of-13 shooting and the 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Sixth Player of the Year also snared seven rebounds.

Junior guard Suntana Granderson continued her solid stretch with 17 points. Granderson was 3-of-4 from deep and 6-of-12 overall and also dished-out a game-high four assists.

Senior forward Tara Boothe scored 15 points and snared six rebounds. Classmate Kristy Wallner scored five points and snatched nine rebounds while dishing-out three assists.

Freshman guard Jerri Taylor established career highs with 22 minutes, 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and four rebounds.

The Musketeers never trailed, scoring the game's first seven points and charging out to a 17-7 lead when Candyce Bingham drilled a 3-pointer at the first half's 11:40 mark.

EKU's Tamara Arnold hit a 3-pointer on the next possession but the Musketeers charged out to a decisive 22-4 run and seized a commanding 39-14 lead with 3:40 remaining in the first stanza. Five different Musketeers scored during XU's key stretch.

The Musketeers did not let up in the second half, scoring 16 of the session's first 22 points and leading by 25, 56-31, with 10:30 left in regulation.

Xavier extended out to its largest lead of the game when Taylor drained a jumper with 1:02 to go, giving XU an 82-47 lead.

The Musketeers shot a solid 50 percent from the floor (32-of-64) and held EKU to only 33.3 percent shooting (18-of-54) including 14.3 percent from deep. The Colonels were forced into 26 turnovers and the Musketeers took advantage, converting those miscues into 29 points.

 

 

XU also held a commanding 43-to-30 advantage in rebounding including a 15-to-9 edge on the offensive glass.

XU is back in action on Saturday, December 10 when the team takes on Louisville. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Freedom Hall.
