Jenna Crittendon finished with 12 points and eight boards in the win

CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's basketball team defeated the Murray State Racers, 70-66, Wednesday night at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 4-4 on the season, while the Racers fall to 5-3 overall. Four Musketeers scored in double figures in the victory.
Freshman Leah Schaefer (Alexandria, Ky./Highlands HS) led XU in scoring with 13 points, a new career high. She also had three assists and a team-high-tying eight rebounds.
Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) scored 12 points to go along with her eight rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) and senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) added 10 points each for the Muskeeters. Six of Wanninger's points came from behind the arc. She also brought down six rebounds. Zantt was also successful from three-point territory, making two. She also contributed with six rebounds.
Other contributors for the Musketeers included senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy), sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and freshman Madison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS). Hawkes had nine points, five rebounds and tied for the team-lead in assists with four. Glover had nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Blackwell scored all of her six points in the paint.
After grabbing her own rebound and being fouled, Schaefer hit two foul shots to score the first points of the game. The game went back and forth, as the teams exchanged leads 17 times during the first half. Xavier's three-point shooting started off strong, as Crittendon, Glover, and Schaefer combined to hit three straight to give the Musketeers a 13-10 lead. The teams continued to trade baskets until Xavier went on a 4-1 run to end the first half. Murray State took 32-31 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Musketeers started the second half with some fast baskets. Wanninger hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Xavier a quick 37-32 lead. After Murray State responded to take a one-point lead, Xavier went on a 7-0 run, helped out by a Hawkes three-pointer and a Blackwell steal and subsequent layup for a 44-38 lead with 16:13 remaining.
Murray State would not go away, as they continued to battle to get baskets. They were able to take a 53-52 lead after two foul shots with 10:51 to play. Xavier went ahead 59-56 after a huge Glover block which led to Crittendon going coast-to-coast for an and-one play with 5 minutes remaining. After that, XU did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game and finished with the 70-66 victory.
As a team, Xavier shot 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from the field and 25.8 percent (8-of-31) from beyond the arc. XU had 15 assists on their 25 made shots. Murray State knocked down 24-of-62 shots (38.7 percent) from the floor, but also made 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from three-point territory. The Musketeers outscored the Racers, 28-26 in the paint, and also outrebounded them 45-41. 11 of those 45 rebounds came on the offensive end.
The Blue and White are back in action on Saturday, December 7 when they take on Austin Peay (3-4) at Cintas Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
