CINCINNATI – The No. 4/5 Xavier Musketeers women’s basketball team defeated the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State by a score of 85-40 on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 6-0 on the season. Senior All-American candidate Amber Harris led five Musketeers in double figures with a game-high 16 points. Harris’ fellow senior All-American candidate Ta’Shia Phillips recorded 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Junior Tyeasha Moss contributed 14 points and five assists. Freshman Ashley Wanninger posted career-highs in points (10), rebounds (5), and assists (5). Sophomore Amber Gray posted a career-high 10 points on 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) shooting. Xavier shot 31-for-65 (47.7 percent) on the game.
An aggressive defensive performance by the Musketeers caused the Devilettes to shoot 14-for-52 (26.9 percent) for the game and commit 20 turnovers. Xavier won the battle of the boards 49-32.
Senior Special Jennings opened up the game with a 3-pointer from the left wing on Xavier’s first possession and the Musketeers never looked back. At halftime, Xavier held a 40-16 lead. Harris paced the Musketeers with 16 points, matching the entire Devilettes team. Phillips hauled in eight rebounds in the first half. The Musketeers went 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) from the field and recorded an assist on all 13 made field goals in the half.
The Devilettes were held to 19.2 percent on 5-of-26 shooting in the half. Mississippi Valley State was led by junior Ka’Neisha Smith with 14 points and five rebounds. Junior Brittany Lakes added nine points for the Devilettes, who fall to 1-4 on the season.
The No. 4/5 Xavier Musketeers will face the University of Southern California Trojans on Thursday, December 2 at Cintas Center in Cincinnati. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET.
