Saturday's Game Notes
CINCINNATI - The Xavier University women's basketball team will take on the Cincinnati Bearcats in the 30th edition of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout on Saturday, December 1. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Cintas Center. The Musketeers, who have won the last three Shootouts by an average of 25 points, come into the contest with a 4-2 record. Cincinnati plays at Dayton on Thursday and goes into that game with a 4-1 mark.
Record-Setting Day vs. McNeese State
The Musketeers set several individual and team records in their 97-60 victory over McNeese State on November 24. Ta'Shia Phillips set a new single-game individual rebounding record by hauling in 20 boards and Jerri Taylor buried nine 3-point field goals to tie a single-game school record. As a team, XU connected on 17 3-point field goals to best the previous school record of 14. The 58 first-half points scored by XU marked the most first half points XU has ever scored. The 58 points was also the most scored in any half since Kevin McGuff took over as head coach prior to the 2002-03 season. XU also held a +36 rebounding margin to set a new school record.
Home Streak Still Breathing
XU has not lost consecutive home games in a span of 55 games. The last time XU lost consecutive home games came on November 27 and December 4, 2004 when Xavier lost to Auburn (55-53) and Maryland (74-72) respectively.
Harris Comes up Big vs. Penn State
Amber Harris scored 30 points, snared 13 rebounds and blocked five shots in Xavier's 72-68 win over Penn State on November 15. 21 of her 30 came after halftime and the sophomore scored nine consecutive points over a two-minute stretch to put Xavier up by four points with under two-minutes remaining. Harris scored 15 points and swatted three shots as XU embarked on its decisive 26-7 run.
Ta'Shia Phills Up the Stat Sheet
Freshman standout Ta'Shia Phillips recently earned her second-straight Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor and enters today's game leading the Atlantic 10 in rebounding at 13.2 rebounds per game. Phillips has three double-doubles and has notched double-digit rebounds on four occasions. She is also tied for second in the league with a field goal percentage of .571. Phillips' 20 rebounds on November 24 vs. McNeese State established a new single-game record.
Taylor Finds Her Game
Junior guard Jerri Taylor has been outstanding so far this season. Taylor is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 17.8 points per game and third in the league with a 3-point field goal percentage of .500. Taylor also leads the league with 3.67 3-point field goals per game. Taylor averaged 4.1 points per game over her first two years and had scored in double-figures only six times prior to this season. Taylor has already recorded double-digit scoring five times this year. Taylor tied a school record with nine 3-point field goals vs. McNeese State on November 24.
Xavier Not at a Loss
XU's loss to Louisville on November 30, 2006 marked the Musketeers' first two-game losing streak since the team dropped a 74-72 decision to No. 22 Maryland on December 4, 2004. Since the Maryland game, XU is 24-1 following a loss. Xavier extended the streak with a win over Penn State on November 15.
The Series vs. Cincinnati
Xavier is 9-20 all-time vs. the Bearcats as this marks the 30th consecutive year that XU and UC have squared off (since the 1978-79 season.) The UC/XU series can best be characterized as streaky. UC won the first 11 meetings and XU then answered by winning six out of the next seven meetings. Cincinnati then rattled off eight straight wins prior to Xavier's current three-game winning streak vs. the Bearcats. Kevin McGuff is 3-2 vs. UC in his career as XU has won the last two meetings by an average of 25 points.
