ST. THOMAS, USVI – Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) finished with a team-high points as the Xavier women's basketball team fell to #2/2 Duke, 81-54, Thursday afternoon on day one of the 2013 Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands.
With the loss, XU falls to 2-3 overall, while the nationally ranked Blue Devils improve to 6-0 on the season. The loss also drops Blue and White’s all-time record vs. teams ranked in the Associated Press Poll to 11-31 (.355).
The Musketeers, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in three-point field goals made per game (7.5) this season, knocked down 8-of-24 shots from behind the arc, including five triples in the first half.
Crittendon tallied a pair of rebounds and two assists and scored her 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the floor, 4-of-10 from long distance and a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe in 29 minutes of action. Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) registered 10 points and a team-high six assists. Freshman Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS) tallied nine points and knocked in her first two triples of her collegiate career. Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) chipped in with eight points and three boards, while classmate Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) added five points, two boards, one assist and one steal. Freshman Leah Schaefer (Alexandria, Ky./Highlands HS) finished with four points to go with a team-high five boards, three assists and a pair of blocks.
The Blue Devils opened the game by forcing the ball inside to their post players and using their height to their advantage. Elizabeth Williams scored eight of Duke’s first 10 points as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 10-2 lead just 2:57 into the opening period.
The teams traded trifectas before the Musketeers used a 9-4 spurt, highlighted by a pair of triples from Blackwell, to cut the Duke lead down to three points (20-17) midway through the first half.
The Blue Devils responded with a 20-5 run to extend their advantage to 18 points (40-22) with just 1:16 remaining in the period.
Glover went on a solo 4-0 run over the final 50 seconds of the period to cut the Duke lead down to 14 points (40-26) heading into the locker room at the intermission.
The teams went back-and-forth to start the second half. After a layup from Duke’s Alexis Jones gave the Blue Devils a 54-36 lead (15:05), the Musketeers used a 6-2 run, capped by a Blackwell elbow jumper, to trim the Duke lead to 56-42 with 13:40 left in regulation.
The Blue Devils went on to outscore XU 25-12 over the final 13:40 to pick up the 81-54 win in the first game of the Paradise Jam.
As a team, Xavier shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the field compared to a 59.6 percent (34-of-57) mark for Duke. The Blue Devils outscored the Musketeers, 48-18, in the paint and won the rebound battle, 39-24.
The Blue and White are back in action on Friday, November 29 when they take on Kansas (3-1) on the second day of the Paradise Jam. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
