CINCINNATI - Freshman sharp shooter Katie Rutan led five Musketeers in double-figures with 17 points as the No. 9/14 Xavier University women's basketball team decimated Mississippi Valley State by a 92-52 score on Monday evening at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 3-0 on the season while the Devilettes slip to 1-1.
The Musketeers will depart for the Bahamas on Tuesday as the team will participate in the 2009 Junkanoo Jam on Grand Bahama Island. Xavier will take on No. 18 Kansas on Thanksgiving Day and will play wither TCU or Minnesota on Saturday.
Rutan's 17 came on 6-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Rutan is now second on the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game. Sophomore guard Tyeasha Moss scored 14 points and was 5-of-8 from the floor. She was also 4-of-6 from long-range and chased down five rebounds.
This one was never in doubt as the Musketeers sprinted out to a 20-3 lead after just 6:30 of action. The team never looked back and was able to rest its regulars en route to the win.
The Musketeers shot a solid 56.1 percent from the floor, including a blistering 53.1 percent from deep. The team scored an astonishing 54 points in the paint and held a decisive 25-to-0 advantage in fast break points. XU also out-rebounded the Devilettes 47-to-36.
No starter played more than 20 minutes on Monday as the team chose to rest the regulars in anticipation of the Junkanoo Jam.
Ashley Brown scored 15 points for Mississippi Valley State.
