Women's Basketball Cruises Past Coppin State 86-46

BALTIMORE - Junior guard Miranda Green and senior Tara Boothe scored 18 points to lead the Xavier University women's basketball team past Coppin State 86-46 on Friday evening in Baltimore. The contest was the regular season opener for both squads. With the win XU improves to 23-12 in season openers including 10-8 in regular season openers on the road.

XU's 46 first-half points equaled Coppin State's point total for the game.

Green's 18 points came on 8-for-8 shooting and she also dished-out four assists.

Senior Kristy Wallner scored nine points and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds for the Musketeers while juniors Michele Miller and Suntana Granderson scored 14 and 10 points respectively.

XU shot a sizzling 61.8 percent from the floor, and held Coppin State to only 29.4 percent from the field.

The Musketeers put this contest away early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead at the 16:10. Miller keyed the run with four quick points. Coppin State would cut the led to six points, 10-4 just 30-seconds later, but XU would charge out to a decisive 19-3 run over the next 8:50 to take a commanding 21-4 advantage 6:50 to go in the first half. Boothe keyed the run for XU with seven points.

Xavier extended its 46-17 halftime lead to a 41 point advantage, 70-29 at the second half's 12:10 mark. However the Lady Eagles would score the next eight points, shrinking the Musketeer lead to 72-39 at the nine-minute mark.

Bingham would score the next five points to erase CSU's spurt.

The contest marked the debuts of freshmen Danitra Lewis and Jerri Taylor as both scored their first collegiate points. Lewis' first points came on a pair of free throws at the 1:29 mark of the second half and Taylor's first points came on a floater as time expired in the first half.

 

 

Taylor ended the game with five points while Lewis scored four points on the night.

XU dominated the glass on Friday, out-rebounding the Lady Eagles 45-to-25 including 37-to-15 on the defensive glass.

The Musketeers are back in action on Sunday, November 20 as XU stays in the "Old Line State" to take on No. 14 Maryland. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Comcast Center and fans can follow the action through GOXAVIER.com via internet radio broadcast and gametracker.
