@Xavier_WBB Drains Nine Triples In 69-39 Win Over Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Nov. 17, 2013
CINCINNATI - Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Xavier women's basketball team to a 69-39 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center.
Xavier's defensive effort was solid all afternoon. The 39-point output by UAPB marks the first time the Blue and White have held an opponent to 39 or fewer points since Dec. 6, 2009, when they defeated Cincinnati, 69-38.
With the win, XU picked up their second consecutive win and improved to 2-1 overall, while the Golden Lions fell to 1-3 on the season. The win also gave Blue and White their 22nd straight victory in home openers. Since Cintas Center opened prior to the 2000-01 season, the Musketeers are a perfect 14-0 in home openers.
The Musketeers, who are third in the BIG EAST in three-point field goals per game (9.0) this season, knocked down 9-of-33 shots from behind the arc, including five triples in the second half.
Wanninger tallied seven rebounds and four assists and scored her 17 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the floor and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe in 29 minutes of action. Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) registered a 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field and 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) chipped in with 11 points and three boards, while classmate Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) added 10 points, two assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals. A pair of freshmen has solid performances for XU as Leah Schaefer (Alexandria, Ky./Highlands HS) finished with five points and six boards and Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS) tallied four points and a game-high nine boards.
Carlisha Walker led UAPB with 12 points and six rebounds, while Christina Lasane added seven points for the Golden Lions.
The Musketeers jumped on UAPB early, using an 18-4 run, highlighted by seven points from Wanninger, over the first 7:56 of the opening period. The Golden Lions responded with a quick 6-0 run to cut the XU lead down to 18-10 (10:11).
Leading 18-10, Xavier employed another huge run (15-4), capped by a Hawkes layup, to grab a 33-14 advantage with less than six minutes left in the period. The teams would trade buckets over the final five minutes of the half and XU took a 36-18 lead into the intermission.
Hawkes led the Musketeers with 10 points and three boards in the first half, as XU shot 39.3 percent (11-for-28) from the floor. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was held to 28.6 percent (8-for-28) shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Xavier opened the second half on a 14-2 spurt, highlighted by five points from both Glover and Zantt, to take a 50-20 advantage.
The Musketeers would cruise the rest of the way and went on to pick up the 69-39 non-conference victory.
UAPB was limited to 31.5 percent (17-for-54) from the floor and we unable to connect on any of their nine attempts from behind the three-point line.
The Blue and White shot 31.3 percent (20-for-64) from the floor and hit 9-of-33 three-pointers. The Musketeers also registered 10 steals, forced 21 turnovers (scored 27 points off of those turnovers) and tallied 13 assists on 20 made baskets.
