ANN ARBOR, Mich. - After leading by as many as 14, the No. 5/6 Xavier women's basketball team came away with an 85-76 win at Michigan Monday night at UM's Crisler Arena. Junior Tyeasha Moss recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists as one of five Musketeers with double-figures scoring.
Junior Katie Rutan had a game-high tying 22 points for XU while seniors Amber Harris (16p/10r) and Ta'Shia Phillips (18p/13r) each added a double-double as well. The fifth Musketeer in double figures was senior Special Jennings who posted 10 points, five assists and four steals.
After losing the rebound battle at South Carolina on Friday, the Musketeers crashed the boards versus Michigan (1-1) and ended up with a 36-21 advantage. Xavier (2-0) shot 49.1 percent for the game and 46.4 percent from beyond the arc, going 13-for-28 from long range, while UM was 50.9 percent overall and 38.7 percent behind the 3-point line.
Jennings gave Xavier (2-0) its largest lead of the game at 70-56 with 10:38 left in the contest. The Wolverines then used a 15-3 run to slice the Musketeer lead to two, 73-71, on a layup from Veronica Hicks. Michigan would get no closer than two as XU got a few clutch stops down the stretch to put the game away.
Rutan had an amazing first half for the Musketeers - 22 points off a career-high tying seven three's and a free throw. Harris had nine in the first frame for XU as the Musketeers headed into the locker room with the three-point, 47-44, advantage and a 17-12 rebounding margin as well.
The Musketeers return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 23 as they host Louisville in their 2010-11 home opener. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
