Nov. 4, 2008
CINCINNATI - Sophomore Ta'Shia Phillips scored 20 points, hauled in 18 rebounds and was three blocks shy of a triple-double but the No. 22 Xavier University women's basketball team dropped a 75-67 decision to the OGBR Legends in exhibition play at Cintas Center in Cincinnati.
The contest is XU's only exhibition of the season and the team opens the 2008-09 regular season on Friday, November 14 against Robert Morris in the first round of the Preseason WNIT. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cintas Center.
OGBR, which boasts three WNBA players, extended its 40-35 halftime lead to 10-points, 49-39, after Courtney Coleman converted on a lay-up at the 17-minute mark. The Musketeers would respond though and charged out to a 20-10 run over the next 9:40 to knot the game up at 59 with 7:20 to go.
However, OGBR put the game away with a 7-0 run over the next minute, which was capped by a fast break lay-up by Coleman.
Phillips' 20 came on 9-of-17 shooting and 10 of her game-high 18 boards came on the defensive glass. Phillips was one of four Musketeers in double-figures as Tudy Reed scored 15, Jerri Taylor dropped in 14 and Dee Dee Jernigan chipped in with 11. Reed was 7-of-14 from the floor and Taylor was a solid 4-of-7 from long-range.
Jernigan also recorded four thefts to go along with her 11.
OGBR shot a blistering 50.9 percent from the field, including an unconscious 53.3 percent from long-range. The Musketeers won the battle of the boards by a 41-to-33 count and held a 15-6 edge on the offensive glass.
Amanda Lassierter led the way for OGBR with 21 points and nine rebounds.
