McGuff Announces Finalization of 2005-06 Women's Basketball Schedule
Sept. 9, 2005
CINCINNATI - Head coach Kevin McGuff has announced the finalization of the Xavier women's basketball team's 2005-06 schedule. This year's slate is highlighted by 11 games against teams that competed in national postseason play last year including nine games against teams that played in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. "The 2005-06 schedule will be challenging, especially with the addition of a very good Charlotte team and an up-and-coming St. Louis team," said McGuff. "But this team is up to the challenge and is prepared for the high-quality competition. We are also very excited that Xavier women's basketball will enjoy national exposure on January 22 when ESPN2 televises our game against Temple." XU will play a total of 14 games against teams that won 20 or more games during the 2004-05 season. The 2005-06 schedule consists of 15 home games and 12 away games. XU will open up exhibition play at Bowling Green in a closed scrimmage on Saturday November 5. Xavier's second and final exhibition contest will take place on Friday, November 11 when XU takes on the Ohio Legends at Cintas Center. The Musketeers will open up Atlantic 10 play at Charlotte on Tuesday, January 3. That match-up will be Charlotte's first conference game against an A-10 team. Charlotte went 22-9 in 2004-05 and was invited to the WNIT. XU will also face Charlotte on Sunday, February 5 at Cintas Center. XU's A-10 home opener comes on Friday, January 6 vs. St. Louis and XU will be back on the road on Sunday January 8 when the Musketeers square-off with Rhode Island. URI was 8-20 last season but earned the A-10 East Division's No. 2 seed with a 6-10 conference mark. The Musketeers return to Cincinnati for a showdown with Richmond on Friday, January 13. Last year's contest with the Spiders was a thriller as XU won 66-64 after Miranda Green converted on a driving lay-up with five-seconds to go. Richmond finished the 2004-05 season at 23-8 and went to the NCAA Tournament First Round.
XU will then head to our nation's capital for the first of two match-ups with George Washington on Sunday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m. G.W. finished at 23-9 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials will travel to Cintas Center on Friday, February 3. Xavier will then drive up I-75 for a meeting with Dayton on Thursday, January 19. The Flyers finished 12-16 in 2004-05 and were 6-10 in conference action. The Flyers will head south to take on Xavier in XU's final regular season game of 2005-06 on Sunday, February 26. Temple, a team that advanced to the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, will travel to Xavier for a 2:00 p.m. game that will be televised by ESPN2. The Owls, the A-10 Tournament Champion, finished the 2004-05 season with a 28-4 record including a 16-0 mark in the A-10.
