CHICAGO - The ninth-seeded Xavier women's basketball team had a rough shooting night (13-of-48; 27.1 percent) and fell to No. 8 Georgetown, 56-37, in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Saturday night.
With the loss the Musketeers fall to 8-23 overall, while the Hoyas improve to 11-20 on the season and advance to the quarterfinals to face top-seeded DePaul.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference play in three-point field goals per game (6.9), knocked down six trifectas on 25 attempts.
Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) finished with eight points and three boards, while classmate Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) chipped in with eight points, six steals and five rebounds. Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) in her final game as a Musketeer added seven points in 34 minutes. Seton Hall opened the game with a 20-8 run over the first 9:48 of the first half. The Musketeers responded with a 16-4 run, capped by a layup from Schaefer, to tie the contest at 24-24 with 2:22 left in the opening period.
GU responded over the final two minutes and outscored Xavier 7-2 to take a slim 31-26 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Blue and White, led by six points from Zantt, Blackwell and Wanninger, knocked down 10-of-25 (40 percent) shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while the Hoyas were successful on 54.2 percent (13-of-24) of their attempts. Xavier was outrebounded by GU 18-10 in the first half and lost the points in the paint battle 18-10.
Georgetown opened the half with an 8-0 run and held XU scoreless until Glover slipped to the basket for a layup at the 12:18 mark (39-28). The Hoyas continued to pour it on, using a 13-1 run to extend their lead to 23 points (52-29) with 7:04 left in regulation.
As always, the resilient Musketeers never gave up and continued to battle, but their shooting woes and GU's lead was too much for the Blue and White to overcome and they fell to Georgetown 56-37 in the first round of the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament.
