PHILADELPHIA - The seventh-seeded Xavier women's basketball team was upset Friday evening by No. 10 Temple, 52-45, in the first round of the 2013 Buick Atlantic 10 Championship. The Musketeers finish the season with a 13-16 overall record and they posted an even 7-7 mark in regular season league play.

Junior Ashley Wanninger led the Xavier with 13 points and five rebounds and senior Amber Gray also posted double-figures scoring with 11 points. Freshman Aliyah Zantt also grabbed five boards to go with her eight points and junior Shatyra Hawkes dished out a team-high four assists in the loss.

Xavier shot 33.8 percent from the floor for the game to Temple's 37.5 percent. The Owls out-rebounded the Musketeers, 38-30, and committed 18 turnovers to XU's 20 miscues.

XU scored the first five points of the second half to cut the TU lead to three, 28-25, two minutes into the frame. Temple went on to score 12 straight points before 3-pointer from junior Ashley Wanninger set the score at 40-28 in favor of the Owls with 12:38 showing on the clock.

A 6-0 run by the Musketeers cut into the Owl lead, 46-34, near the six-minute mark. Temple was up 11, 52-41, with 1:36 left to play but Xavier continued to fight. Freshman Jenna Crittendon sank both of her free throws late in the game and freshman Briana Glover made a layup at the buzzer but it was not enough as Temple came away with the seven-point, 52-45 win.

The Musketeers start the first half on fire scoring 12 of the first 15 points. The Owls answered with a 14-0 run to take over the lead, 17-12, and held XU scoreless for nearly seven minutes. Xavier pulled to within two, 19-17, but Temple went on to score nine unanswered points to stretch its lead to 11, 28-17, with 1:27 left in the half.

With one of her signature rainbow 3-point baskets, Wanninger stopped the run and cut the Owl advantage to eight, 28-20, with just over a minute to play. Temple would head into the locker room holding the same margin as no one else could find the bottom of the net during the last minute of action. Zantt led the Musketeers in the first frame with eight points, Pachko with four rebounds.

The Owls were led by Rateska Brown with a game-high 14 points and Victoria Macauley posting the game's only double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

This concludes the 2012-13 season for the Musketeers and it is also the end of seniors Amber Gray and Jessica Pachko's careers. Xavier athletics would like to thank both for their dedication and commitment to the program. Good luck in the future!
