LOWELL, Mass. -- The No. 5/6 Xavier women's basketball team completed a 17-0 Atlantic 10 season by wrapping up its second consecutive and fourth conference tournament title in five seasons with a 67-60 victory over the Dayton Flyers in the Tsongas Center.
The top-seeded Musketeers raised their overall record to 28-2 with their 18th consecutive victory and third of the season over the Flyers. Xavier's sixth all-time conference title ties Penn State for the most in Atlantic 10 history.
Senior Ta'Shia Phillips led the way for XU by manufacturing her 21st double-double of the season with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Classmate Special Jennings tallied her 12th double-figure scoring performance of the season with 17 points and added a career-high eight rebounds. Senior Amber Harris posted her 29th double-figure scoring effort of the season with 12 points and rounded out her 18th double-double of the campaign with 11 boards.
Dayton was led by Justine Raterman with 19 points on 9-of-12 from the field. XU won the battle of the boards in commanding fashion 49-32, and dominated the paint with 50 points to UD's 22.
Two straight second-chance points by Phillips cut the UD lead to 41-38 with 15:29 left to play in the game. Harris tied the game at 41 on a fast-break feed from Jennings with 13:17 left in the contest.
Two free throws by Jennings with 12:42 left in the game gave the Musketeers their first lead of the game, 43-41.
Harris' offensive rebound followed by an acrobatic jumper with 3:46 left in the contest gave the Musketeers a 58-53 lead and was part of a 6-0 XU run. Jennings' finger roll at the 3:02 mark extended the XU lead to 60-56.
The Flyers would not go down without a fight as Justine Raterman hit a contested layup at the 2:00 mark to tie the score at 60.
The Musketeers managed to pull ahead for good with 1:30 left in the game as Philips hit a contested jumper in the paint to put XU ahead 62-60. Xavier was strong at the free throw line as well in the final seconds as the ladies in gray hit three crucial free throws to seal the win.
Dayton led 35-30 at the half thanks to 15 points from Raterman on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Phillips led the way for the Musketeers with 16 first half points on 8-of-12 from the field.
UD jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game with Raterman scoring five of the Flyers' first 11 points.
XU bounced back and pulled within four points (15-11) on an old-fashioned three-point play by Jennings with 11:52 left in the first period.
Phillips earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honor while senior cohorts Jennings and Harris were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Xavier will find out who it will play in the NCAA Tournament Monday, March 14.
