@Xavier_WBB Falls At Seton Hall In Regular Season Finale

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) finished with 12 points and six rebounds as the Xavier women's basketball team fought hard to climb back into the contest but fell to Seton Hall, 62-50, in the BIG EAST Conference regular season finale at Walsh Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
With the loss the Musketeers fall to 8-22 overall and 3-15 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates improve to 17-12 on the season and 8-10 in conference.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference play in three-point field goals per game (6.6), knocked down eight trifectas on 26 attempts.
Wanninger shot 4-of-12 from the field and 3-of-10 from behind the arc to finish with a team-high 12 points in 38 minutes of action. Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) finished with 11 points eight boards, while classmate Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and two steals. Freshman Leah Schaefer (Alexandria, Ky./Highlands HS), playing in her first game since Feb. 8 at Georgetown, added eight points and six boards, while fellow rookie Sydney Neal (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS), who made her first collegiate start, finished with five points and a pair of steals.
Seton Hall opened the game with a 12-5 run over the first 5:09 of the first half. After a three-point play from Tabatha Richardson-Smith put the Pirates ahead 17-8 (11:53), the Musketeers used an 8-3 run, capped by a three-pointer from Zantt, to cut the SHI lead down to four points (20-16) with 9:57 left in the opening period.
SHU responded in a big way, using a 17-2 run over the final 9:57 of the first half to take a 37-18 lead into the locker room at the intermission. During their run the Pirates held the Musketeers to just one field goal.
The Blue and White, led by six points from Zantt, knocked down 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while Seton Hall was successful on 40.5 percent (15-of-37) of their attempts. Xavier was outrebounded by the Pirates 28-14 in the first half and lost the points in the paint battle 18-4.
The second half was played evenly over the first ten minutes. After a bucket from Sidney Cook at the 10:02 mark, Xavier used a 17-4 run, highlighted by six points from both Wanninger and Glover, to cut the SHU lead down to six points (56-50) with 3:12 left in regulation.
Seton Hall would hold off the Musketeers over the final three minutes and pick up the 62-50 win.
The Blue and White will now head to Chicago to participate in the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament (March 8-11). XU, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, with take on No. 8 Georgetown on March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
