@Xavier_WBB Comes Up Short At Butler 57-52

INDIANAPOLIS - Three players scored in double figures as the Xavier women's basketball team fought hard but fell to Butler, 57-52, in BIG EAST Conference action at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
With the loss the Musketeers fall to 8-20 overall and 3-13 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs improve to 13-14 on the season and 8-8 in conference.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference play in three-point field goals per game (7.2), knocked down 4-of-15 shots from behind the arc.
Sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) finished with a team-high 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) added 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor, 2-of-4 from behind the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Freshman Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville) tallied 10 points, three rebounds and three assists, while classmate Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS) nearly recorded her second consecutive double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds and nine points.
The Bulldogs, who won the rebounding battle (34-28) and scored 28 points in the paint, were led by 19 points from Liz Stratman and a double-double from Daress McClung (16 points, 11 rebounds).
Xavier shot out of the gate early in the first half, using a 19-9 spurt, highlighted by a pair of treys from Wanninger, over the first 7:47 of the period. Butler responded in a big way, employing a 14-0 run to grab a 23-19 advantage (5:05).
The Musketeers would go on to outscore BU 11-7 over the final five minutes to tie the contest at 30-30 going into the locker room at halftime.
The Blue and White knocked down 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while Butler was successful on 46.4 percent (13-of-28) of the attempts. Xavier forced BU into 11 first half turnovers and scored six points off of those miscues.
After Butler went ahead 41-37 thanks to a Liz Stratman bucket, the Blue and White used an 11-4 run, capped by a pair of Glover free throws, to grab a 48-45 lead with 4:31 left in regulation.
The Bulldogs took the lead on a basket from McClung with 3:18 on the clock. Blaire Langlois followed up a pair of free throws with a key three-pointer and Taylor Schippers iced the Butler victory at the free throw line.
The Blue and White will now return to Cintas Center to host Villanova on March 1 for Senior Day. XU and Villanova will tip off at 12 p.m. and the Senior Day Ceremony honoring Wanninger will begin at approximately 11:45 a.m.
