CINCINNATI - The 6/6 Xavier women's basketball seniors went out with a bang on Senior Night defeating George Washington, 67-41, Wednesday night at Cintas Center. Redshirt senior Amber Harris directed Xavier to its 14th-consecutive win with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
XU improves to 24-2 overall, one win shy of tying the school record for most regular season wins. The Musketeers are now 13-0 in the Atlantic 10 conference, and winners of 30 consecutive conference games. George Washington falls to 8-19 overall, and 3-10 in the A-10.
Xavier won the battle of the boards by a 38-32 margin and the Musketeers shot 44.8 percent (26-58) on the night from the field, including 63.6 (7-11) percent from long range. The Colonials were held to 30.2 percent (16-53).
This was the seventh time this season XU has given up 50 or less points.
After a slow first half, Xavier started hot in the second half going on an 18-5 run over 6:45 minutes to give the Musketeers a 54-30 edge. Xavier's lead would only grow from there, reaching 30 at the three-minute mark thanks to a 10-0 run. During the final run, five different Musketeers contributed points.
The Xavier seniors combined for 41 of the team's 67 points. Harris with 23, center Ta'Shia Phillips tallied nine, guard Special Jennings had seven and guard Megan Askew added two. Phillips recorded double-digit rebounds for the 20th time this season.
The Musketeers didn't take their first lead of the night until over six minutes into the game. The lead came during a 10-2 run capped by a made free-throw by Jennings. The Colonials kept it close all first half and even had a lead late, but the Muskies were just too much as XU entered the locker rooms with a 36-25 advantage.
Heading into intermission Harris led the way with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Phillips nearly posted double digit rebounds with eight during first 20 minutes.
Tiana Myers led George Washington on the night with 11 points.
Xavier travels to Philadelphia to meet conference foe Temple Sunday February 27 to decide the regular season league champions. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
