CINCINNATI -Freshman forward Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS) had a career afternoon as the Xavier's women's basketball team fell to Providence, 61-59. Blackwell notched her first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 8-19 overall and 3-11 in BIG EAST play, while the Friars improve to 7-20 on the season and 2-14 in conference.

Blackwell shot 8-of-14 from the field in 33 minutes of play.

It was a relatively slow offensive first half for both teams. The Musketeers opened the game on an 8-2 run with 16:39 remaining but the Friars did not relent, scoring 11 of the game's next 15 games. Providence held a 20-18 lead heading into halftime, with junior Tori Rule leading all scorers with eight points at the break. The Blue and White shot 18.5 percent from the field while the Friars shot 25 percent.

The Musketeers regained the lead, 38-37, with 9:15 left to play. Xavier was able to increase its lead to five points, but Providence continued to chip away. A three by freshman Sarah Beal tied the game at 49-49 with 4:33 remaining. The teams exchanged lead changes eight times for the rest of the game. With 22 seconds remaining, Evi Iiskola drove to the basket for a layup to give the Friars a 60-59. She was fouled on the layup, resulting in a foul and made free throw that sealed the Providence win.

Three other Musketeers, Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason), Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) and Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS), scored in double figures.

Glover added 12 points, three rebounds and also had a block. Wanninger scored 11 points, five boards and two assists. Zantt contributed with 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.



Wanninger shot 8-of-11 from the field and knocked down 3-of-4 shots from behind the arc to finished with 21 points. She also finished with three rebounds. It is the fourth game this season that she has scored 20 points or more.

The Musketeers shot 21-of-58 (36.2 percent) from the field and 5-of-20 (25 percent) from behind the arc. The Friars finished with a 32.2 field goal percentage (19-of-59) including nailing 3-of-9 (33.3 percent) from behind the arc.

Four Friars scored in double figures in the win. Beal scored a team-high 18 points and also added six rebounds and three assists.

The Blue and White will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to face Butler at 7 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 25.
