Boothe and Granderson Pace Women's Hoops to 77-50 Victory Over UMass
Feb. 17, 2006
CINCINNATI - Senior forward Tara Boothe notched her 35th career double-double with 27 points and 13 rebounds and junior guard Suntana Granderson dropped in 22 points to lead the Xavier University women's basketball team past UMass, 77-50, on Friday evening at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 18-7 on the campaign and 9-5 in Atlantic 10 action. UMass slips to 9-15 overall, 6-7 in the loop.
Boothe's 27 came on 12-of-20 shooting and the double-double was her eighth this season. Granderson was 7-of-13 from the field and converted on a sizzling 6-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc. The six 3-point field goals tied her career high.
Sophomore wing Candyce Bingham was the third Musketeer in double-figures as she posted 10 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks.
XU extended its 49-24 halftime lead to a 56-30 advantage when Boothe converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 14:40 mark.
However, XU would go cold and UMass would heat up as the Minutewomen sprinted out to a 12-0 run over the next 3:30 to shrink the Xavier lead to 14 points, 56-42, with 11:10 to go.
Xavier shot a solid 47.6 percent from the field on the night and was a blistering 71.4 percent (20-of-28) in the first half.
The win marked XU's sixth in the last seven games and XU avoided consecutive home losses, running its streak of home games without consecutive losses to 25 games.
The Musketeers turned the ball over only nine times on Friday while 22 of XU's 30 field goals came via the assist.
Pam Rosanio led the way for UMass with 11 points and seven rebounds.
UMass tied the game up at two points a piece when Patrycja Gulak hit a jumper 2:20 into the contest. Xavier would respond though and took the lead for good when Granderson hit the first of her five first-half 3-pointers 20-seconds later. Granderson's three-ball sparked a 13-0 Xavier run, which the Musketeers used to take a 15-2 lead at the 14:30 mark.
The Musketeers would put the game away over the final 5:10 of the first half as the team mounted a 15-2 run to take a commanding 49-24 lead into the locker room. Two more Granderson threes and five points from Bingham keyed the XU run.
XU get the rest of the weekend off and will be back in action on Friday, February 24 when the team welcomes Saint Joseph's to Cintas Center. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cintas Center.
