MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Freshman Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville) scored a career-high 14 points as the Xavier women’s basketball team fell at Marquette, 75-54, in BIG EAST Conference action at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss the Musketeers fall to 8-17 overall and 3-10 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 17-7 on the season and 7-5 in conference.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference play in three-point field goals per game (7.4) in BIG EAST games, knocked down 8-of-23 shots from behind the arc.
Davis made 5-of-10 shots from the floor to finish with a career-high 14 points. She also added five assists, two steals and two rebounds. Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) chipped in with 13 points. Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor and 5-of-12 from long distance.
Katie Young’s 19 points and eight rebounds led the Golden Eagles, who outrebounded XU 41-19. Katherine Plouffe and Arlesia Morse each added 12 points for MU.
Trailing MU 9-8 early in the first half, Xavier used a 7-2 run, capped by a layup from sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS), to take a 15-11 advantage with 9:04 left on the clock. Marquette responded with an 11-4 run to go ahead 22-19 (4:59). A huge triple from Wanninger from the left wing ended the Golden Eagle run and knotted the game at 22-22 (4:46).
The teams each scored 10 points to close the half and went into the locker room at the half with the score even at 32-32.
The Musketeers shot 11-of-25 (44 percent) from the field and 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from behind the arc and forced Marquette into 13 first half turnovers. Wanninger and Davis paced the Blue and White with nine points each in the opening 20 minutes.
Marquette came out on a mission to open the second half. The Golden Eagles used a 22-7 run over the first 6:36 of the second period to grab a 12-point lead (51-39). Xavier was able to get within nine points (62-53) with 6:04 left, but were unable to get any closer and fell to MU 75-54.
The Blue and White will return home to host Creighton in the annual Play4Kay contest on Feb. 18 (7 p.m.). Fans who wear a pink t-shirt will be able to purchase a $5 ticket and the first 500 fans will receive pink pom poms.
