WASHINGTON - The Xavier women's basketball team dropped a 54-44 decision at George Washington Wednesday afternoon. In a game dubbed "Field Trip Day" featuring area school kids, senior Tyeasha Moss led the Musketeers with 15 points and four assists.
Xavier , which has split its last four contests, falls to 5-17 overall and 2-7 in Atlantic 10 play with the loss while George Washington improves to 11-12 on the year and 4-5 in league action.
XU out-rebounded GW, 47-44, as both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket at times. The Colonials shot 31.1 percent from the floor for the game and the Musketeers shot 25.8 percent.
The score was tied at 28-all with 16:38 to go after sophomore Ashley Wanninger drained a long-range jumper. The Colonials then used a 15-2 run to jump out to the 13-point lead, 43-30, with just under 12 minutes remaining. XU pulled within six late in the contest but GW made seven free throws down the stretch to hold on to the advantage.
Both teams struggled offensively in the early going with George Washington leading 10-4 at the under-12 media timeout. The Musketeers put together a 9-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 13-12, capped off by two free throws from Moss. The two squads traded leads and Moss' layup with eight seconds left in the half seemed to give XU the advantage heading into the locker room. GW's Danni Jackson thought otherwise as her long-range buzzer-beater put the Colonials up 22-20 at the half.
The Colonials were led by Jackson with a game-high 22 points and Brooke Wilson with a game-high 18 rebounds.
The Musketeers continue their two-game road trip Saturday in Bronx, N.Y. as they square off against the Fordham Rams. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Rams' Rose Hill Gym.
