DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier women's basketball team battled the 18th-ranked Dayton Flyers Thursday night but eventually fell, 78-68, at UD Arena. Senior Amber Gray led all scorers with 21 points as the Musketeers shot 45.0 percent (27-60) from the floor for the game. XU falls to 7-15 overall and 1-7 in Atlantic 10 play while Dayton improves to 20-1 on the season and 8-0 in league action.

Gray also corralled eight rebounds and dished out four assists to only one turnover. Also for the Musketeers, freshman Aliyah Zantt added 14 points, three assists and three steals while classmate Briana Glover chipped in 13 points, all of which came in the second half.

XU won the battle of the boards, 39-32, and dished out 21 assists to 19 turnovers on the night. UD also shot 45.0 percent (27-60) from the floor but the advantage came in the 15-of-20 made free throw shots as Xavier only took three free ones on the night.

Glover started the second half hot with five-straight points for the Musketeers, cutting the Flyer lead to four, 35-31. Junior Ashley Wanninger's 3-point basket near the 16-minute mark knotted the two squads at 36 apiece. The Flyers would hold the Musketeers scoreless for the next two-and-a-half minutes and would never relinquish the lead.

Freshman Jenna Crittendon's layup with 11:21 remaining set the score at 50-43 in favor of Dayton but the Flyers buried seven unanswered points to stretch their advantage to 14. Despite being down, the Musketeers continued to battle. Gray's jumper with just over one minute to play reduced the UD lead to six, 74-68, but the Flyers would hold on for the 78-68 win.

 

 

With 14:21 showing on the clock in the first half, the Musketeers held the 9-6 lead over the Flyers. The two squads were knotted at 11 apiece with just over 10 minutes remaining in the frame when UD used a 10-2 run over the next six minutes to break open 21-13 advantage.

With back-to-back 3-point baskets, Dayton pushed its lead to 27-16 before Pachko scored four unanswered points to stop the Flyer rally. Gray capped the Musketeers' first half scoring with a three with just over a minute left. She led XU with 10 points and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

The Flyers were led by Samantha MacKay with 18 points, one of four Flyers in double-figures scoring, and dished out seven assists. Olivia Applewhite chipped in 11 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Musketeers return to action Sunday as they return home to host La Salle. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Cintas Center for the team's Play 4 Kay Pink Out game. Wear pink!
