CINCINNATI - Xavier's women's basketball squad fell at home to DePaul Wednesday night, 78-49. Senior Shatyra Hawkes led the Musketeers with 17 points in the loss.

With the defeat, XU fell to 8-15 overall and 3-8 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul improved to 18-5 overall (9-2 BIG EAST).

Along with a team-high 17 points, Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) grabbed six rebounds and five assists. Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) was second on the team finishing with 11 points and five rebounds. Freshman Leah Schaefer (Alexandria, Ky./Highlands HS) grabbed a team-high eight boards and added three points.

The Blue Demons jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and held the Musketeers without a basket until Kayla Davis hit a foul line jumper at the 15:28 mark. Both teams traded baskets until Xavier used an 8-0 run of its own and great defense to hold DePaul without a basket for over six minutes and tie the game at 16-16. Chanise Jenkins scored a layup with 3:10 left in the first half to end the drought and gave DePaul the lead for the rest of the half.

It looked like DePaul was about to go into the locker rooms up by six until Hawkes rushed to get off a forty-foot jumper, getting fouled in the process and hitting the free throw for the four-point play. The Musketeers trailed the Blue Demons 26-24 at the half.

DePaul came out firing in the second half and making a quick three just 42 seconds into the half. Xavier answered with back-to-back threes of its own from Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and Wanninger to grab its first lead of the game with 17:30 left, 32-29. XU used another back-to-back three-point sequence from Wanninger and Hawkes to retake the lead with 15:07 left, 39-36. The Musketeers fell behind after DePaul decided to use a full court press to go on a 30-2 run, covering almost nine minutes of the second half, and grabbed a 66-41 lead. The Musketeers were held scoreless for exactly six minutes during that run until Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) hit a jumper from the elbow at the 9:07 mark. DePaul used tough defense and great shooting for the final minutes to close out the game and claim the win at Cintas, 78-49

Xavier was hot and cold from the field shooting just 36 percent (18-of-50) and shot an above average 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from three. Xavier came in ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in three-pointers a game (6.5) and sixth in three-point percentage (28.9 percent).

DePaul struggled from the floor in the first half. The Blue Demons shot just 10-of-32 (29.4 percent) from the field, including just one make in 12 attempts from beyond the arc, and shooting 5-of-11 from the charity stripe. The second half was a different story for the Blue Demons, shooting 60.6 percent from the field, 7-of-9 from three and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

Brittany Hrynko scored a team-high 18 points for DePaul. The Blue Demons also got a double-double performance from Jasmine Penny with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Podkowa was the other DePaul player to finish with 10 rebounds and two points shy of a double-double.

XU will travel to Georgetown for its next match up Saturday afternoon, February 8 at 4:00 p.m.
