@Xavier_WBB Drops Road Contest At St. John's 80-48

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Xavier women’s basketball team shot just 34 percent from the floor and were forced into 16 turnovers as they fell to St. John’s, 80-48, in BIG EAST Conference action at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night.
With the loss the Musketeers fall to 8-13 overall and 3-6 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm improve to 15-5 on the season and 8-1 in conference.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked third in the conference play in three-point field goals per game (7.3), knocked down 5-of-17 shots from behind the arc.
Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) led the team with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field. Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) added nine points and a pair of assists. Freshman Sydney Neal (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS) finished with career-highs in minutes (18) and points (7), while the BIG EAST’s leader in steals sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) scored five points to go with a pair of thefts.
The Red Storm, who won the rebounding battle (44-22) and scored 42 points in the paint, were led by Keylantra Langley’s game-high 16 points.
SJU jumped out to a 13-7 lead early in the half. After an old-fashioned three-point play from Wanninger cut the Red Storm lead down to 13-10 with 14:17 left in the period, St. John’s responded with 13-3 spurt to grab a 26-13 advantage at the 9:54 mark.
Leading Xavier, 36-23, with 3:00 left in the opening half, SJU held the Musketeers scoreless, closing the period on an 8-0 run to take a 44-23 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Xavier, who knocked in 4-of-8 from long range, shot just 8-of-25 (32 percent) from the field in the first half, compared to SJU’s 54.5 percent (18-of-33). Xavier lost the first half rebounding battle 23-10 and were forced into 11 miscues in the opening 20 minutes. Langley led SJU with 13 points, while Amber Thompson tallied a double-double with 10 points and 14 boards. Wanninger scored seven points for the Blue and White, while Zantt and Hawkes scored five points each.
In the second half, St. John’s continued to pour it on, extending their lead to as many as 37 points, before picking up the 80-48 win.
The Blue and White will now return to Cintas Center to host Butler on Feb. 1. XU and Butler will tip off at 5 p.m. and the contest will be Xavier's first and only home TV game of the season (Fox Sports 2).
