CINCINNATI – Seniors Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) and Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) combined for 38 points and 11 rebounds as the Xavier women’s basketball team fell to the Seton Hall Pirates, 72-62, Tuesday night at Cintas Center.

With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 8-1 overall and 3-4 in BIG EAST play, while The Pirates improve their record to 12-5 overall on the season and 3-3 in conference.

Xavier, who entered the game second in conference play in three-point field goal percentage (.369) and third in three-point field goals per game (7.5) knocked down 11-of-25 on the night, good for a 44 percent clip.

Wanninger scored 16 points and also added six boards and four assists. Hawkes finished with 12 points, five boards and five helpers. Wanninger and Hawkes each had three three-pointers. Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle) scored nine of her 11 points from beyond the arc and registered seven rebounds.

Sophomores Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) and Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) chipped in with seven points each. Glover also added six boards and two assists.

The Pirates were led by the trio of Tabatha Richardson-Smith, Ka-Diedre Simmons and Bra’Shey Ali. Richardson-Smith had a game-high 23 points, while Simmons recorded 17 points and nine assists. Ali recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The Musketeers opened the game with a Crittendon three-pointer, which would be a precursor for the rest of the half. Seton Hall was able to take a 12-8 lead with 15:07 to go, and would hold a lead for nearly ten minutes.  After SHU took a 20-13 lead (10:38), the Musketeers used a 20-7 run, capped by a Hawkes trey-ball, to take a 33-27 lead with just over five minutes left in the half. Seton Hall finished the half on a 9-0 run and took a 40-36 halftime lead.

The Blue and White shot lights out from behind the arc in the first half, hitting eight of their 14 attempts from long range. The eight treys made in the first half was the most XU had made in the opening 20 minutes since the knocking down nine first period triples against Georgetown (Jan. 8).

Seton Hall was able to push its lead to 9 with 18:30 remaining in the second half. A Wanninger three-pointer, part of a 6-0 XU run, cut the Pirates lead to three. Later in the half, with 12:09 left, Hawkes’ trey tied the game at 52 apiece. A minute later, Wanninger made a pair of free throws to give the Musketeers their first lead since 5:03 in the first half (54-53).

The Pirates then used a 6-0 run to retake the lead and did not look back. Xavier continued to battle, but Janee Johnson knocked down a big shot from beyond the arc as the shot clock expired to push Seton Hall’s lead to eight (70-62) with 1:18 left. SHU went on to hold off Xavier and picked up the 72-62 conference victory.

Xavier finished the night 19-of-51 (37.3 percent) from the field and 11-of-25 (44 percent) from beyond the arc. Seton Hall had a 44.6 field goal percentage (29-of-65), including shooting 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from long distance.

Xavier had 16 assists on 19 made shots and also had six steals in the loss, but lost the rebounding battle 38-32 and were forced into 21 turnovers.

The Blue and White will now hit the road for a pair of BIG EAST contests to close out the month. XU will face Villanova (Jan. 25) and St. John's (Jan. 29) to wrap up the month of January.
