CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Xavier women's basketball team dropped a 67-55 decision at Charlotte Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Junior Ashley Wanninger led the Musketeers with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Xavier falls to 6-11 overall and 0-3 in A-10 action while Charlotte improves to 13-4 on the season and 2-1 in league play.

Also for the Musketeers, junior Shatyra Hawkes scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half for XU and added five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Senior Amber Gray grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds, added eight points and dished out a career-high-tying five dimes. Freshman Briana Glover chipped in a career-high 11 points as the third Musketeer in double-figures scoring.

Xavier shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the field and 33.3 percent (4-12) from long range. The Musketeers made five of eight free throws (62.5%) but fumbled 18 turnovers. Charlotte won the battle of the boards, 35-29, and went 30-of-63 from the floor (47.6%).

Hawkes opened the second half with six straight points for the Musketeers as Xavier tried to remain in the game. Glover converted her two free throws late in the game and the Musketeers were able to steal the ensuing in-bounds pass by the 49ers. A quick Glover layup cut the Charlotte lead to five, 60-55, with just under two minutes left. The Niners were able to score the last seven points of the contest to take the 67-55 win over the Musketeers.

Both teams traded baskets early on and Wanninger's layup with just under seven minutes remaining in the half gave XU the 19-18 lead. The 49ers used a 7-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to go up seven, 25-19, and would hold onto the advantage the rest of the half. The Musketeers cut the lead to two, 25-23, on another Wanninger layup but the Niners scored the last four points of the half to take the 29-23 lead into the locker room.



The Niners were led by Jennifer Hailey with 23 points and 13 rebounds for the game's only double-double. Two other 49ers scored in double figures while Ny Hammonds dished out a game-high seven assists.

The Musketeers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 with a mid-week match-up against the Fordham Rams. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at XU's Cintas Center.
