CINCINNATI - Seniors Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) and Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) combined for 31 points and 11 boards as the Xavier women's basketball team defeated Providence, 75-52, in BIG EAST Conference action Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center.
With the win the Musketeers improve to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Friars fall to 6-11 on the season and 1-5 in conference.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest tied for second in the conference play in three-point field goals per game (7.4), knocked down 8-of-20 shots from behind the arc, highlighted by a trio of trifectas from Wanninger.
Hawkes shot 6-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-3 from long distance to finish with 16 points to go with seven boards and three assists, while Wanninger knocked down 5-of-12 from the field and 3-of-8 from behind the arc to record 15 points in 28 minutes. Sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) finished with 11 points, five boards, three assists and a steal, while classmate Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) registered 10 points.
The Friars were led by Tori Rule and Alexis Harris. Rule finished with a game-high 18 points, while Harris recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Providence opened the game with a 13-5 run to jump on the Musketeers early in the opening half (14:35). Xavier responded in a big way, employing a 27-11 run, highlighted by seven points from both Wanninger and Hawkes, over the final 14 minutes of the period to take a 32-24 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
In the second half, PC's Tori Rule knocked in a three-pointer to cut XU's lead down to six points (37-31) with 18:14 left on the clock. Xavier responded by using a 17-6 run, capped by a fadeaway jumper from freshman Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville), to take a commanding 54-37 lead (12:21).
The Musketeers continued to pour it on PC, outscoring the Friars 43-28 in the second half, before picking up the 75-52 victory.
Xavier finished the afternoon 27-of-59 (45.8 percent) from the field and 8-of-20 (40 percent) from long distance, while Providence made just 30.5 (18-of-59) percent of their attempts from the field and 28.6 (4-of-14) from three-point range. XU won the rebounding battle (41-38) and forced PC into 19 turnovers, which resulted in 24 points off of those miscues.
The Blue and White will be back in action at Cintas Center on Tuesday, Jan. 21 to host their final BIG EAST contest of January. XU will face Seton Hall in a conference matchup that is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
