OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) finished with a team-high 12 points as the Xavier women's basketball team fell at Creighton, 79-50, in BIG EAST Conference action at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Musketeers fall to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Bluejays improve to 11-7 on the season and 5-1 in conference.
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked second in the conference play in three-point field goals per game (7.8), knocked down 6-of-15 shots from behind the arc, highlighted by a pair of trifectas from sophomores Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle) and Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS).
Glover made 4-of-8 shots from the floor and 1-of-3 from long distance to finish with 12 points to go with a three assists and a pair of rebounds. Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) registered seven points and seven assists, while Crittendon chipped in with six points and a game-high nine rebounds. Zantt recorded eight points and a pair of steals, while freshman Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville) registered seven points and a pair of rebounds in 13 minutes.
The Bluejays, who had four players finish in double figures, were led by Marissa Janning's game-high 29 points.
Xavier opened the game with a quick 5-0 run, off a layup from Hawkes and a triple from Crittendon, to jump on CU early. The Bluejays responded with a 10-2 run to take a 10-7 lead at the 12:31 mark of the opening period.
After a 10-4 spurt by the Blue and White put them ahead 17-14 (8:06), Creighton closed the half by outscoring Xavier 18-5 over the final eight minutes of the period, which included holding XU scoreless for nearly five minutes, to take a 32-22 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
In the second half, a layup from freshman Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS) with 14:16 left in regulation cut CU's lead down to 46-32. Creighton went on to outscore Xavier 33-18 over the final 14 minutes, extending their lead to as many as 31 points before picking up the 79-50 victory.
The Blue and White will now return to Cintas Center to host their final BIG EAST contests of January. XU will host Providence (Jan. 18) and Seton Hall (Jan. 21) before hitting the road for a pair of games to close out the month.
