SAINT LOUIS, -- Senior forward Joei Clyburn scored 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead a season-high six Musketeers in double-figures as the Xavier University women's basketball team drilled the Billikens, 85-61, on Friday evening in Saint Louis. With the win, Xavier's fifth straight, the Musketeers improve to 13-4 on the season and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play. SLU slips to a level 8-8 on the year and to 0-2 in the loop.
Both Clyburn and Miller notched double-doubles vs. the Billikens as Clyburn snared 11 rebounds and Miller snatched a game-high 12 to go along with 15 points on five assists.
Seniors Suntana Granderson and Miranda Green each scored 13 points and were 4-of-9 from the floor. Classmate DeAnna Mason scored 12 points and freshman Amber Harris scored 10 points and hauled in seven rebounds.
Xavier used a 9-2 run to construct a 44-38 lead at the half and extended that spurt out to a devastating 23-9 run to take a commanding 67-47 lead with nine-minutes remaining in the game.
The Musketeers took their largest lead of the game, 77-49, with 5:20 to go and cruised to the victory.
XU dominated the lane, out-scoring SLU 56-24 in the paint and the Musketeers improve to 10-0 when out-scoring their opponents by at least 10 points in the paint.
Xavier was firing on all cylinders offensively, shooting 55 percent from the field including 56.3 percent in the first half. The Musketeers held SLU to just 33.9 percent shooting on the night and XU was especially stingy in the second half, holding the Billikens to just 25.8 percent from the floor.
Xavier also took care of business on the glass, out-rebounding SLU by a 51-to-25 margin including 36-to-15 on the defensive glass.
Maggie Hennegan led the way for Saint Louis with 20 points.
The Musketeers stormed out of the gate and took a 13-6 lead after Granderson drained a 3-pointer just 4:40 into the contest. Granderson was on fire early, scoring seven points by the 15:20 mark but had to sit most of the first half due to four trouble.
Saint Louis responded though and took a 17-15 lead on the strength of an 11-2 run over the next 3:10. The lead was short-lived though as Clyburn knotted the score up just 12:30 later on a lay-up.
XU built a 33-26 lead at the 6:10 mark but SLU responded with a 10-2 run over the next 2:30 but Xavier answered the bell and went into the locker room on a 9-2 run an holding a 44-38 lead.
Xavier will return to action on Sunday, January 14 when the team travels to Charlotte. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and the contest will be televised nationally on CSTV.
